Brodey Hasty of Brentwood, Tenn. opened his 2017 cross country season Friday night at the adidas XC Challenge at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

Hasty, who competes unattached, didn't have much competition. Instead, he demonstrated his fitness by running against the clock and churning out a 14:44.7 time for 5,000 meters.

The second-place finisher ran 15:59. Hasty went through 2K in 5:58, by which time he had a 16-second lead.

In the Division 1 college competition, Michigan's men scored 22 points to beat host North Carolina State (36) and 11 other teams. The Wolfpack went 1-2-3 on the way to 20 points to take the women's title.
